City of St. John’s adding Indigenous street names to Reserved Street Names Inventory
In December 2025, the City of St. John’s expanded its Reserved Street Names Inventory and added a list of Indigenous street name suggestions to reflect local Indigenous cultures, languages, and connections to the land. The list of 75 street name suggestions was compiled by First Light staff and includes names in Inuttitut, Mi’kmaw, and Innu-aimun.
For First Light:
- Work with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department to change policies surrounding street naming restrictions.
For the City of St. John’s, City of Mount Pearl and Town of Paradise:
- Include Indigenous street names in the next stage of municipal planning.
For Municipalities of the Northeast Avalon:
- Invite contributions of Indigenous words and phrases, including those in Inuttitut, Mi’kmaw, and Innu-aimun, for municipal street names inventory.
