Action Area 3: Infrastructure and Service Delivery
Focus Area A: Expanding Cultural Spaces
Establish a highly visible monument in the City of St. John’s to honour the survivors of residential schools and those who never made it home to their families.
City of St. John’s and First Light: Planning underway
With funding allocated by the City of St. John’s, First Light and the City are moving forward with an overall design for the monument. The project will follow a multi-phase approach, allowing an initial monument to be created within the available resources, with other elements of the design to be incorporated as further funding from additional sources is secured. In the coming year, First Light and the City plan to issue a call for initial concepts. Shortlisted artists will receive funding to develop their designs in greater detail. First Light will also convene an intergenerational circle of Elders, Knowledge Keepers, residential school Survivors, and their families. With appropriate supports, the circle will collectively guide key decisions about the monument, including its design and location.
For First Light
- Convene Circle of residential school survivors and their families, with appropriate supports, to gather and collectively make important decisions, such as where the monument will be constructed.
- Publish a call for proposals for the design of the monument.
