SSHRC-funded Project convenes in St. John’s We’re Indigenous and Still Here (WISH) convenes in St.John’s

In June 2026, We’re Indigenous and Still Here (WISH) brought together storytellers, historians and researchers from Saskatoon, Prince Albert and St. John’s. This project, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), has the overall goal of amplifying stories of urban Indigenous communities that have been excluded from processes of reconciliation. By sharing these stories, the project seeds to expand public and scholarly understanding of reconciliation. The project focuses on the challenge of understanding what reconciliation means for the Métis of the prairies and urban Indigenous Peoples in Newfoundland and Labrador, both of which groups have are often left out of national conversations and federal processes of reconciliation.

Need identified: Better public education to reduce colonialist discrimination

Many Indigenous community members who contributed to this Reconciliation Report emphasized the need for better public education, describing experiences of discrimination rooted in widespread misunderstandings about Indigenous cultures, histories, and present-day realities.

First Light Cultural Diversity Training to include Experiential Learning Program

First Light is expanding its public education offerings to include a 40-hour Experiential Learning program exploring the cultures, histories, and present-day realities of Indigenous Peoples in Newfoundland and Labrador. Combining classroom instruction with cultural activities and land-based learning, the program challenges concepts such as terra nullius and the Doctrine of Discovery while guiding participants toward greater understanding and good relations. See Call for Change 6 for more information.

Action Area 3: Infrastructure and Service Delivery

We envision a city that reflects the histories and cultures of the Indigenous Peoples of Newfoundland and Labrador and one where members of the urban Indigenous community are able to access essential services free of discrimination. To realize this vision, we call on all residents of St. John’s to help advance change in the following ways:

Focus Area A: Expanding Cultural Spaces
