In Mount Pearl, the meaning of community now stands in vivid colour.
A new permanent installation at Centennial Park opens the city’s heart to say: we welcome everyone who we share these lands with. On Sunday, November 2nd, community members came together to celebrate its unveiling, with a beautiful afternoon filled with art, music, and community spirit.

At the heart of the event was the breathtaking mural by Mi’kmaw artist Melissa M. Francis, (studio120nl) whose vision, talent and passion shone through every detail. This piece now stands as a lasting reflection of story, identity, and belonging, woven into the very heart of the city.

This mural honours the enduring presence and cultural strength of the Mi’kmaq people across time, land, and generations. Commissioned by the City of Mount Pearl, it reflects the deep relationship between Indigenous peoples, the natural environment, and contemporary urban spaces. Centered around the Waterford River and surrounded by symbols of tradition and renewal, the artwork represents Indigenous culture as living, evolving, and guiding us toward a respectful and connected future.

Community members were held warmly with song by Deantha Edmunds and her daughter, Annabelle Edmunds-Ramsay. Their powerful and uplifting voices carried across the park, reminding us of the way music can bridge generations and bring people together.

At First Light, we are proud to walk alongside the City of Mount Pearl in this important step toward building a more inclusive community: one that honours Indigenous neighbours, uplifts local talent, and creates a welcoming space for all.

When community members visit Centennial Park, they will now see a more vibrant, inclusive space, where Indigenous artwork is integrated into everyday life. It was truly a day of pride, connection, and joy, and we are grateful to everyone who joined in celebrating this milestone moment.

Be sure to visit Centennial Park (61 Bannister Street, Mount Pearl, NL) to experience this incredible mural for yourself!
