Much of our work at First Light is rooted in mental health and wellness. Not as something separate from daily life, but as something deeply connected to our bodies, our relationships, the land, our communities, and the journeys we are on.

For Bell Let’s Talk Day (January 21) this year, we are continuing our commitment to supporting the wellbeing of our community by ‘Taking a Moment for Mental Health’ during our programming. Our moment includes wellness kits for participants attending our programs throughout the week. These kits are small gestures of care, shared in the spirit of grounding, reflection, and connection.

Seeking support is wisdom
When your body or spirit signals that something is out of balance, listening to that message and seeking support is an act of awareness and self-respect. It is something to be acknowledged and celebrated, not stigmatized.
At First Light, we understand mental health as something shaped by many parts of life, including physical health, access to care, community, culture, and lived experience.
Wellness looks different for everyone. Our programs and services are designed to meet people where they are, with care for each person’s path and circumstances.
Advocating for Change
Mental health support must be accessible, culturally grounded, and shaped by the people it serves.
Call for Change 33: Work with healthcare providers and community organizations to ensure that urban Indigenous people are able to access services related to mental health, addictions, and recovery free of discrimination.
This call acknowledges that many urban Indigenous people continue to face barriers when seeking care and that collaboration across systems is necessary to create access that is safe, respectful, and equitable.

Wellness activities
Our Year of Listening is an invitation to pause and reflect. It encourages us to be in better relationship with ourselves, with one another, and with the land. Listening helps us notice what we are carrying and what support might help along the way.
As part of Bell Let’s Talk Day, we invite you to try some of the grounding and wellness activities we are sharing. Take what feels helpful, at your own pace. Even small moments of care can help us stay connected and attentive to our needs.
Reach out to your community
If you need support or someone to talk to, First Light supports and wellness counselling are available throughout the year. You are always welcome here.
If you need to talk to someone right away, there are many support systems available, with 24/7 coverage (for most).

We also extend our gratitude to the National Association of Friendship Centres for their continued support of Friendship Centres across the country and their commitment to community-based wellness.
