First Light Congratulates Members of City Councils in St. John’s and Mount Pearl

St. John’s, NL – First Light St. John’s Friendship Centre extends its congratulations to all new and returning members of the St. John’s and Mount Pearl City Councils following the municipal elections on October 2 and October 8.

“First Light values the relationships we have built with municipal leaders and the important role local government plays in advancing truth and reconciliation,” said Stacey Howse, First Light’s President and CEO. “Through the Joint Coordinating Committee on Indigenous Rights, we have a meaningful forum for dialogue, mutual understanding, and shared action. We look forward to deepening this work with both St. John’s and Mount Pearl in the years ahead.”

The Joint Coordinating Committee on Indigenous Rights (JCCIR), established in 2024, brings together First Light, the City of St. John’s, and, more recently, the City of Mount Pearl to support the implementation of commitments under each city’s Declaration in Support of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

“As the urban Indigenous community continues to grow across the metro region, the collaborative work of truth and reconciliation becomes more vital than ever,” said Howse. “By working together in right relations, we can build a strong and prosperous community for the benefit of all residents of the metro area.”
