Local by-laws, roads, parks—your daily life. If you live in St. John’s, make your voice heard!
Who handles what?
Newfoundland & Labrador (Provincial Election)
- Indigenous health access: MCP cards, provincial health clinics/programs, mental health & addictions services, patient travel within NL.
- Education: K–12 curriculum, school policies, funding, post-secondary grants/bursaries.
- Child & family services: child protection, foster/kin care, youth-in-care supports.
- Justice system: provincial courts, Legal Aid, restorative justice/mediation programs, victim services, corrections/probation.
- Crown Lands & permits: land leases, cabin permits, harvesting/firewood permits, camping rules.
- Culture & heritage protection: archaeology permits, heritage site protection, museum/arts/language revitalization funding.
- Hunting, fishing & trapping: seasons, tags, licences (except migratory birds), outfitter licensing.
- Housing & income supports: NL Housing programs, income support, disability supports, seniors’ benefits.
- Environment & resource projects: provincial environmental assessments, consultation processes, wildlife management.
- ID & records: vital stats (birth certificates, name changes), driver’s licences.
City of St. John’s (Municipal Election)
- Snow clearing & local roads: access to community centres, sidewalks to bus stops, traffic calming.
- Transit: Metrobus transit; bike lanes; GoBus accessibility.
- Parks, trails & rec facilities: inclusive program design.
- Facility use & ceremonies: permits/policies for smudging indoors, ceremonial fires and sweat lodges outdoors (collaboration with St. John’s Regional Fire Dept).
- Public spaces & events: special event permits, street closures, vendor licences.
- Garbage, recycling, water & sewer: service reliability, boil-water or service interruption advisories.
- Zoning, development & heritage: city zoning, planning/heritage designations; signage/interpretation.
- Bylaws & enforcement: noise restrictions, fire rules.
- Public art & place naming: commissions, murals, plaques, and place-naming.
- Emergency management: warming/cooling centres, storm responses, communications about closures impacting services.
