First Light’s Justice Supports team provides culturally grounded, community-based services for Indigenous people who are navigating the justice system. Our work is rooted in Indigenous values, knowledge, and ways of being, and focuses on healing, connection, and support.
We have a long-standing commitment to supporting Indigenous people at every point of contact with the justice system. Over the past decade, our team has delivered in-reach programming at both Her Majesty’s Penitentiary (HMP) in St. John’s and the Newfoundland and Labrador Correctional Centre for Women (NLCCW) in Clarenville. Programming has included ceremony, cultural teachings, one-on-one support, and reintegration planning, all informed by lived experience and community-identified needs.
What we offer
Our current programming supports Indigenous people who are:
- On federal parole or provincial/federal probation;
- In contact with the justice system through the courts or release planning; and/or
- Within 12 months of release from a correctional facility.
We provide:
- A peer-based men’s support group for male-identifying federal parolees;
- Court accompaniment, airport accompaniment, and transportation; and
- Assistance navigating the justice system and accessing cultural supports.
We remain committed to supporting Indigenous people at all points of contact with the justice system. Our team is actively working to secure resources and to strengthen partnerships that are needed to grow and deepen our work in this area.
Our Team
Our Justice Supports team offers culturally grounded, front-line care rooted in respect, consistency, and connection. They walk alongside Indigenous community members with compassion, supporting those navigating complex systems with steadiness and heart.
