Summary
At First Light, we know that stories carry power — they connect us, teach us, and strengthen our community. The Storytelling Specialist ensures that these stories are captured and shared in ways that honour culture, community, and organizational impact. In close partnership with the Story and Connections Coordinator, you’ll not only capture our impact- but proactively pitch, develop and lead new storytelling campaigns that reflect First Light’s spirit.
Who You Are
You’re someone who notices stories everywhere and understands how to tell them in engaging, authentic ways. You thrive on creativity, enjoy connecting with people, and are comfortable behind a camera or a keyboard. You value cultural respect, collaboration, and community voice in everything you do. You’re a self-starter who proactively pitches new series, formats and campaigns. You thrive in partnership—you co-own content strategy and editorial planning.
You bring:
- Creative vision – you turn everyday moments into engaging stories through video, photos, and words.
- Adaptability – you thrive in dynamic environments and adjust when plans change.
- Strong communication – you write and speak with clarity, warmth, and cultural sensitivity.
- Tech-savvy skills – you know your way around cameras, editing software, and social media platforms (or have a willingness to learn).
- Community-mindedness – you build trust and relationships while respecting protocols and cultural values.
- Creative initiative & ownership — you propose new ideas, frameworks and formats.
What You’ll Do
Content Creation & Storytelling
- Capture photos and videos at programs, events, and community gatherings.
- Proactively pitch and lead the production of short-form videos (TikTok, Instagram Reels) and longer-form content for campaigns, training, and promotion.
- Schedule and conduct interviews with Elders, staff, and community members to gather authentic stories. Partner with Advocacy, Supports, Health and Early Learning teams to surface stories and turn them into social posts, articles and videos.
- Edit and publish content in line with First Light branding and tone.
- Co-maintain the shared editorial calendar and co-approve scheduled content during planning huddles with the Coordinator.
- Proactively pitch and lead the creation of blog posts, articles, and social media content in collaboration with the Coordinator.
- Provide real-time event coverage (e.g., Instagram Stories, live tweeting).
Planning & Coordination
- Collaborate with the Story and Connections Coordinator on messaging, tone, and content strategy.
- Maintain and update the content calendar, ensuring timely delivery of posts.
- Assist in planning creative campaigns and pitch new ideas that engage community audiences.
- Monitor social media comments during events, respond where appropriate, and flag sensitive issues.
Data Management
- Gather monthly analytics on social media performance to inform strategy.
- Recommend strategy adjustments in collaboration with the Coordinator.
- Maintain and organize multimedia photo/video libraries, and file systems.
Other Information
We value creativity, cultural respect, and relationship-building as much as technical skill. Work hours are generally Monday to Friday (9am to 5pm) with occasional evening/weekend coverage for events.
When you apply, please tell us about your level of comfort and experience with videography, photography, professional writing (like articles and news releases), and showcasing different types of stories and perspectives. Don’t be shy about what you want to learn! Even if you don’t yet have a certain skillset, we’d love to hear which areas spark your curiosity and what you’re excited to explore in this role.
