Summary
The Justice Navigator is a newly established role created through a pilot project aimed at improving justice-related support for Indigenous community members in St. John’s, NL. Rooted in advocacy and cultural safety, the Justice Navigator will act as a bridge between Indigenous individuals, service providers, and justice-related systems. The role will ensure timely, culturally relevant support is accessible to those navigating the justice system.
This position supports First Light’s internal justice work and the broader Advocacy Team through coordination, referrals, education, and stakeholder communication. It also includes courtroom accompaniment, system navigation, and community legal education. The role is integral in identifying systemic gaps and contributing to justice policy and advocacy efforts.

What You’ll Do
Direct Support & System Navigation
- Support Indigenous community members as they navigate the justice system with care, dignity, and advocacy.
- Provide referrals to legal aid, social services, and community-based supports.
- Offer courtroom accompaniment and advocacy when appropriate.
- Communicate legal rights, processes, and available resources in plain, accessible language.
Internal Coordination & Partnership Support
- Collaborate with First Light’s justice staff and Advocacy Team to coordinate supports and services.
- Strengthen communication and partnership between justice stakeholders and community-based service providers.
- Identify trends, barriers, and community needs through frontline engagement.
Advocacy & Legal Reform Support
- Provide frontline insights to inform justice policy and legal reform efforts.
- Document gaps in services and contribute to advocacy for better outcomes for Indigenous people.
Program Implementation & Evaluation
- Maintain accurate records of engagement and service connections.
- Contribute to program evaluation, reporting, and planning during this pilot phase.
- Help plan and support education sessions, outreach activities, and the development of relevant materials.
Skills, Experience and Requirements
- Knowledge of Indigenous cultures, histories, and the realities of Indigenous communities in Newfoundland and Labrador.
- Experience in justice, advocacy, or social services.
- Experience with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office; knowledge of CRM systems is an asset.
- Valid class 5 driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.
