First Light Calls for All Parties to Share Reconciliation Commitments

St. John’s, NL – With the provincial election campaign now underway, First Light is calling on all political parties in Newfoundland and Labrador to share their commitments to advancing truth and reconciliation with and for urban Indigenous Peoples.

Last year, First Light released Reconciliation Report 2024: Steps Taken, Miles to Go, which identified specific next steps required across the provincial government to sustain momentum on the 42 Calls for Change. We are inviting each party to outline how they will act on these steps should they form government.

Parties may respond in writing, by audio, or through video. All responses will be shared on First Light’s website ahead of Election Day, October 14, 2025.

As part of our election-related advocacy, First Light is also inviting political leaders to attend the annual Rally for Reconciliation. Led by community Elders, the nonpartisan event will take place outside Confederation Building at 2:00pm on Orange Shirt Day, September 30, 2025. The public gathering will honour Survivors of the Indian Residential School system and remember the children who never made it home to their families.

“No matter who forms government, we are committed to working with all parties to advance truth and reconciliation in meaningful ways. —Justin Campbell, Director of Advocacy

First Light is also encouraging community members to make their voices heard in this election.

Voters should confirm they are registered by visiting https://www.elections.gov.nl.ca/voters/registration/
