July 25, 2025
St. John’s, NL – First Light is inviting Expressions of Interest from Indigenous artists and/or artist teams in Newfoundland and Labrador for an original piece of art to be installed in Council Chambers at St. John’s City Hall.
This project is part of a broader partnership between First Light and the City of St. John’s through the Joint Coordinating Committee on Indigenous Rights. It aims to advance truth and reconciliation at the municipal level by creating visible, lasting space for Indigenous voices and worldviews within civic governance and decision-making.
The commissioned piece will be a permanent installation that reflects Indigenous identity, presence, and continuity, honouring the deep relationships between Indigenous Peoples and the land where St. John’s is now situated. The final artwork will be gifted by First Light to the City and installed in a central, highly visible location in Council Chambers.
The total artist commission is valued at $30,000. Indigenous artists with connections to any Indigenous community in Newfoundland and Labrador – including urban Indigenous communities – are encouraged to apply. Expressions of Interest are due by Friday, August 8, 2025.
