I do not identify as Indigenous. Am I still able to attend First Light’s programs and avail of their services?
All of our programs and services are available for all members of the community, regardless of ethnicity, cultural background or cultural identity.
Are you still a branch of the National Association of Friendship Centres?
Yes, the First Light – St. John’s Friendship Centre is still a branch of the National Association of Friendship Centres (NAFC) despite its recent name change. All Friendship Centres strive to enrich the lives of urban Indigenous Peoples and non-Indigenous people alike. Across the country, Friendship Centres provide culturally appropriate services for Indigenous people living in urban centres, and have become a place for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to come together, share traditions, and learn from one another.

First Light now operates five locations across St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador
Our headquarters at 716 Water Street, the Centre for Performance and Creativity at 42 Bannerman Street, the Turtle Island Childcare Centre at 97 Elizabeth Avenue, our new Boutique Inn located at 36 Quidi Vidi Road, and finally the future First Light Headquarters located at 40 Quidi Vidi Road.

Most of our programs and services are available for the general public; however, some of our programs and services have age restrictions. For detailed information on each program, please visit our programs page.
Do I have to register for programs or services?
The majority of our programs operate on a drop-in basis, with the exception of: Special Events, Parent-Child Mother Goose, and the Childcare Centre. Registration information can be found here.

Can I film or record/photograph an event or any of your programming?
Generally, it is permissible to record/photograph; however, as a courtesy, you must ask the supervising facilitator and/or guest facilitator, as well as attendees. Additionally, please note that certain ceremonies and certain songs do not permit recording/photographing of any kind.
Do you provide Elder services, land acknowledgement, smudging, or the lighting of the Kullik?
