Position: School Age Educator

Reporting to: School Age Operator

Summary

First Light is seeking an energetic School Age Educator to support our youth programming, serving ages ranging from 5-12, for the summer from June 17 – August 30th. This is a full time, 40 hour/week position, with the opportunity for part time hours in the Fall.

First Light is a registered non-profit organization that serves the urban Indigenous and non-Indigenous community alike by providing programs and services rooted in the revitalization, strengthening and celebration of Indigenous cultures and languages in the spirit of trust, respect, and friendship.

First Light Childcare Centre programming is developed based on the needs of the individual as well as the groups physical, emotional, social, intellectual, and cultural needs. The Early Childhood Educator plays a critical role with the responsibility of planning and implementing all programming to ensure the health and safety of all children.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Support and promote the overall development of youth
  • Observe and identify developmental abilities of youth
  • Implement and maintain developmentally appropriate programs (indoor and outdoor) with a large emphasis on incorporating cultural Indigenous teachings
  • Create daily and weekly documentation on children to provide to parents 
  • Record incident reports as required
  • Administer and record medications given to child as directed (when applicable)
  • Ensure the room is fully cleaned & sanitized at least twice per day
  • Report to School Age Operator on a daily basis and address issues/solutions as they arise

Qualifications

  • Valid RNC/Vulnerable sector check
  • Valid First Aid/CPR
  • Trainee level or above certified Early Childhood Educator through AECENL considered an asset
  • Understanding and knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditions, and practices
  • Experience in a childcare setting planning and implementing a variety of programming activities
  • Experience working with diverse families
