Summary

First Light is a registered non-profit organization that serves the urban Indigenous and non-Indigenous community alike by providing programs and services rooted in the revitalization, strengthening and celebration of Indigenous cultures and languages in the spirit of trust, respect, and friendship.
First Light’s Family Resource programming is developed based on the children and families physical, emotional, social, intellectual, and cultural needs. Reporting directly to the Manager of Early Learning and Childcare, the Family Resource Facilitator plays a critical role with planning, developing and implementing the services to meet holistic family needs. The Family Program Facilitator is an energetic team player who can effectively support families through a holistic approach.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Plan, Develop, and Deliver Culturally Relevant Programs and Services by designing and implementing family resource programs that incorporate Indigenous culture, traditions, and values in every aspect of service delivery.
  • Practice a holistic approach that supports the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being of families, tailoring activities to respect the diverse needs and backgrounds of community members.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with diverse groups, including Indigenous families, Elders, community members, and external stakeholders.
    • This includes active listening, clear verbal and written communication, and cultural sensitivity when discussing sensitive topics or offering support.
  • Facilitate with an empathetic and compassionate approach, fostering trust and comfort in family resource settings.
  • Act as a Liaison and Advocate for Families serve as a trusted point of contact for families, helping them navigate available community resources, services, and supports.
  • Refer community members to culturally appropriate services and collaborate with external agencies to ensure families receive the care and resources they need.
  • Support and Promote Family Well-being by developing and facilitating programs that address the needs of children, parents, and caregivers.
    • Program examples include: teaching circles, land-based learning activities, meal preparation classes that incorporate traditional foods, clothing swaps, and social outings that encourage community bonding and support.
  • Collaborate with the Manager of Early Learning and Childcare Maintaining transparency and current reporting on program developments, successes, and challenges.
    • Draft program reports, case notes, and family intake assessments.
  • Proactively address issues as they arise, and offer solutions to improve program delivery and family support services.

Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of local Indigenous cultures, languages, traditions, and values
  • Lived experience or deep connection with Indigenous communities and knowledge keepers
  • Ability to incorporate Indigenous cultural practices and teachings into program delivery
  • Training in trauma-informed care, family support, or mental health and wellness considered an asset
  • First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain
  • Experience working with Indigenous families and communities, particularly in resource or family support roles, facilitating community programs or group workshops
  • Familiarity with early childhood development, parenting programs, and family support services
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to engage and build trust with families
  • Strong conflict resolution and problem-solving skills
  • Compassionate, patient, and approachable, with a commitment to supporting the well-being of Indigenous families
  • Adaptable and resilient, with a willingness to learn and grow in the role
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Proficient computer skills in various programs, including Google Suite (Docs, Forms, Slides, Meet, Calendar), Zoom, Canva for program administration
  • Clear criminal record check, including vulnerable sector screening
  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation
