Position: Early Childhood Educator Inclusion Support
Reporting to: Childcare Coordinator
Location: 97 Elizabeth Avenue, St. John’s
Salary Range: $18.06 to $35.09 per hour
Summary
At First Light Childcare Centre, our programming is thoughtfully designed to support the physical, emotional, social, intellectual, and cultural growth of every child. The Early Childhood Educator – Inclusion Support plays a key role in ensuring that all children are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences and receive the individual support they need to thrive in the classroom environment.
This educator works collaboratively with families, team members, and community professionals to provide responsive, developmentally appropriate support that nurtures each child’s strengths and abilities. They assist with adapting activities and routines to promote full participation, offer focused support during transitions or challenges, and contribute to an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for children and their families.
With a hands-on and compassionate approach, this role requires strong communication, creativity, and organizational skills, along with a commitment to creating a learning space where every child feels respected, valued, and empowered.

Responsibilities
Essential Responsibilities
- Support and promote the overall development and well-being of children who benefit from additional guidance and encouragement.
- Observe, document, and reflect on each child’s developmental progress, identifying areas of strength and growth.
- Implement positive, supportive strategies to help children engagewith daily routines and learning experiences.
- Communicate with families daily to share meaningful updates about their child’s day, including any progress, challenges, or areas of focus.
- Collaborate with families and external professionals, as needed, to ensure consistency and shared goals.
- Provide focused, one-on-one support to children who require extra time or attention to complete tasks.
- Contribute to maintaining a clean, safe, and organized classroom environment.
- Adapt and maintain developmentally appropriate programming (indoors and outdoors) to ensure all children can participate meaningfully.
- Ensure all children are dressed appropriately for outdoor play, including assistance with outerwear such as hats, mitts, muddy buddies, and sunscreen. Prioritize children requiring extra support during these transitions.
- Participate in and support daily group experiences such as circle time, helping to create an inclusive and engaging environment for all.
- Conduct and document daily observations to support planning and communication.
- Complete incident reports accurately and review them with the Childcare Administrator and parent/guardian for signature.
- Administer medications as directed, ensuring accurate documentation and adherence to policy.
- Assist with diapering and toileting routines, following hygiene and safety guidelines.
- Serve as a positive role model during meal and snack times, encouraging children to try new foods in a supportive manner.
- Help soothe and comfort children during rest periods, using calming techniques such as gentle back-rubbing or rocking, as needed.
- Provide additional classroom support as required to meet the evolving needs of the children and program.
Reporting Responsibilities
- Reports to Childcare Coordinator as per process on a daily basis and address issues / solutions as they arise.
Approval Responsibilities (outlines approval process)
- Requests for materials or supplies beyond the monthly budget must be submitted to and approved by the Childcare Coordinator.
- Requests for annual leave must be submitted in writing and approved in advance by the Childcare Coordinator.
Qualifications
Education/Experience
- Trainee level or above certified Early Childhood Educator through AECENL
- Valid RNC / Vulnerable sector check
- Valid First Aid / CPR
- Experience working with children with additional support needs
- Experience working with Indigenous communities
