Position: Childcare Cook & Custodian

Reporting to: Child Development Coordinator

Summary 

First Light Child Care centre bases its meals on the Canada’s Food guide in consideration with including cultural dishes. The Lead Cook plays a critical role in ensuring all snacks and meals meet the guidelines, while using whole, nutritious foods. The cook ensures that the meals are appealing and tasty to encourage the children to eat a variety of foods. This role also includes cleaning and sanitizing of the kitchen and all common areas in the childcare centre.

Essential Responsibilities 

  • Prepare snacks and lunch. Ensure Canada food guidelines are being followed and ensure natural whole foods are being included
  • Allergy awareness – adapt meals as required
  • Serve out food to all classroom
  • Set up lunch tables in preschool room daily
  • Clean and put away dishes for each meal time
  • Clean floors daily (mopping at least twice per week)
  • Clean common bathroom areas twice per week or more as required
  • All high touch areas are to be sanitized daily as required
  • Laundry for all classrooms daily
  • Responsible to ensure Kitchen door and windows are locked daily
  • Ensure all appliances are turned off when not in use
  • Create grocery list and purchase groceries once per week
  • Order cleaning supplies monthly
  • Ensure all groceries and cleaning materials are put away and organized
  • Regular appliance checks to ensure they are in working condition
  • Check fridge and freezer temperature daily and record 
  • Daily morning backyard checks and complete outdoor backyard checklist
  • Garbage from common areas to be put in outdoor garbage bins at the end of each day
  • Garbage bins are to be put out for garbage day pick up each Tuesday

Reporting Responsibilities 

  • Report to Child Development Coordinator

Approval Responsibilities (outlines approval process) 

  • Requests for additional supplies and materials outside of the monthly budget assigned should be made to the Child Development Coordinator
  • Requests for A/L must be submitted in writing and approved by Child Development Coordinator

Qualifications:

Education/Experience

  • Certified Food Handler – Food safety training and certification (or willing to complete)
  • Valid RNC / Vulnerable sector check
  • Valid First Aid / CPR
  • Understanding and knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditions and practices
