All Candidates Forum for Cape Spear Cancelled; Candidates Invited to Submit Written Comments

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Thursday, April 10, 2025

St. John’s, NL – First Light regrets to announce the cancellation of tonight’s All-Candidates Forum on urban Indigenous issues for candidates running in the Cape Spear riding. Despite strong community interest and preparations for an engaging discussion, the forum will not proceed as planned due to the unavailability of candidates to participate.

Like Tuesday’s successful forum for candidates in the riding of St. John’s East, tonight’s event was meant to give candidates an opportunity to speak directly to the priorities of the urban Indigenous community in St. John’s – including Indigenous rights, urban Indigenous leadership, sustainable services, and cultural revitalization.

In place of the live forum, all candidates in the riding will be invited to provide written responses to the questions that would have been asked during the nonpartisan event. These responses will be published in full, unedited, on First Light’s website as they are received, ensuring that community members still have access to the information they need to make informed decisions at the polls.

“We remain committed to supporting civic engagement in the urban Indigenous community and creating space for Indigenous voices in this election,” said Justin Campbell, First Light’s Director of Advocacy. “Although the forum will not go ahead as planned, we hope that candidates will still take this opportunity to respond to the community’s priorities in writing.”
